Religion

First off, if you have a strong opinion of religion, I might advise against reading any further, as my opinion may be very different. If you chose to read this anyways, then please be respectful in your comments. I am interested in your opinions on the matter, especially if they are different from my own.

I try to keep an open mind towards other peoples beliefs, I at least will not base my actions on disagreements I may have with other people as to how they live their life. It is actually part of my personal creed: "Don't preach to me about your belief, and I won't preach mine to you." That does not mean that I am unwilling to discuss my beliefs, but I wish to have a proper discussion about it, not have someone tell me exactly how to follow God because their way is the right way and mine differs in a minor way and so I will go to hell because I am not practicing my faith the right way. I do believe that I am a Christian, or maybe it is Catholic, I am not sure, as I really take a portion of what is taught to me and actually believe in it. Specifically, what I believe to be the core of almost every religion: some phrasing of "do unto others as you would have them do unto yourself." Combine that with some of the guidelines that the Church has set for how to do this, and you have the basics of the religious aspect of my understanding of the world.

I do not believe that any one religion is superior to another, they all have good things about them, and all have questionable practices. And people who are Agnostic or Atheist are not fundamentally bad people, they just do not see a deity as something that they can commit themselves to. As far as I am concerned, so long as your faith (or lack of) doesn't require you to kill someone, it is reasonably good.

What I am taught in school is that we are to be tolerant, no, welcoming of each others differences, in our religious differences, our political differences, and our differences in sexuality, it does not make us inherently evil or good. You want to know what I believe?
  • I believe that no individual faith is any less correct than whichever one I agree with at the time.
  • That the planet that we refer to as "Earth" or "Terra" was formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago.
  • That Humans may not be the most intelligent of all creatures.
  • That we may not be alone in the universe.
  • That God exists, may even be benevolent, but chooses not to take direct action.
  • That the deities of most religions may in fact be the same god, but depicted in a different manner, sometimes as one, sometimes as many.
  • That science and religion can coexist. "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."-Albert Einstein
  • That Humanity can do good, but they need to take action, more than unwritten complaints and silent prayer.
I would like to clarify, prayer is fine, but only if you are willing to work towards seeing that prayer answered.
